In her more than thirty years in Talbot County, Martha Hudson’s watercolor paintings of our coves, creeks, harbors, fields and villages have earned her countless awards and honors, and a list of prestigious purchasers that any artist would envy. She was a founding member of the renowned “Traveling Brushes,” a group of women artists who initially shared a painting weekend, and ended up sharing their lives through art. Early in her career Martha was the recipient of prize named for a much-admired mentor of hers, and she has now generously offered to continue this tradition by establishing an annual watercolor award through the St. Michaels Art League.
The “Martha Hudson Award for Excellence in Watercolor” is presented annually at the Arty Party, a holiday event to thank members of the community for their support of the arts. The competition to select the award recipient is open to all members of the Art League, and the paintings are displayed at the St. Michaels Library (rear gallery entrance) during the month of December. All the paintings are available for sale.
Barbara Jablin, Martha’s fellow “Traveling Brush,” and accomplished artist in her own right, was the judge for the first competition in 2008, which was won by Tilghman Island artist, Sandy Alanko.
The Art League is pleased and honored to be part of this wonderful tradition. See Calendar for this year's date.
