Lee D'Zmura: Introduction to Botanical Illumination
This is a four-day workshop that will introduce the art of illumination and
botanical illumination. The focus will be on the processes and skills necessary
to create illuminated and botanical letters. Projects will be completed using
gold paint, and gilding will be demonstrated.

For centuries illuminated letters have adorned pages painstakingly created by
monastic scribes. Since the 7th century intricate gilt letters have reflected the
historical period and country of their origin. Celtic, French and Ottoman styles
were each influenced by the reigning culture. Elements of Greek and Roman
mythology were blended with Christian symbols to embellish early manuscripts.
By the 17th century secular symbols replaced religious images. In an age of
increasing interest in plants and nature, botanical illumination evolved as an
art form combining formal script with flowers and plants.
